State Rep Hunschofsky Highlights Back-to-School Safety, Tax Holiday, and Education Advocacy 2

State Rep Christine Hunschofsky

From State Rep Christine Hunschofsky:

It is hard to believe that summer is already slowly coming to an end and that the school year is about to start again. As a mom of two children who are now grown up, I can certainly relate to those of you sending your children off to pre-school, kindergarten, middle school, high school, or college for the first time, and it can be hard. However, just know that your child can manage the new situation. More importantly, make sure you let your child know that you know that they can handle any situation that comes their way and that you will always be there to support them. I wish everyone a wonderful rest of the summer and a fantastic start to the new school year!

Broward Public School students return to school on August 11th, while teachers, administration, and staff go back on August 4th. As we prepare for a great 2025/2026 school year, the Florida Legislature approved a Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday for the entire month of August to help alleviate the cost of school supplies. The sales tax holiday covers a whole range of Back-to-School supplies including clothing under $100, school supplies under $50, personal computers under $1500, and more. For a full list of qualifying items, please visit  www.floridarevenue.com/backtoschool. Additionally, I’m proud to have been a vocal supporter of keeping the bonus funding for AP, IB, AICE, and Dual Enrollment programs in our state budget. These bonus funds were at risk during the 2025 legislative session and, after many meetings and discussions and lots of advocacy, they remained in the budget. Please continue to stay in touch with me and my office on any state issues that affect you. We are here to help and support you in any way we can.

As we head back to school, please be mindful of the school zones and look out for students crossing the road or riding bicycles to get to school. Please allow yourself extra time in the morning so that you are not in a rush and can be fully attentive while driving. It is important that we all do our part to make sure our students, parents, teachers, staff, and administrators make it to and from school safely.

The Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber is hosting a Community Connect meeting with Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn and Dr. Jermaine Fleming on Friday, August 1st, from 12 pm to 1:30 pm at Coral Springs City Hall 9500 West Sample Road. To learn more about this event, visit https://www.csccrchamber.com/chamber-events/. Additionally, the Parkland Chamber is hosting an online Back to School Q&A with Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn and principals of Broward County Public Schools in Parkland on August 5th at 6 pm. To register, visit www.parklandchamber.org/events. Both of these are great opportunities to ask questions and find out what to expect from Broward Schools for the upcoming school year.
