Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has launched a six-month nationwide campaign to combat online misinformation, fake news, and digital fraud.
Dubbed “Futa Delete Kabisa”, the initiative seeks to raise public awareness on the dangers of sharing unverified online content, particularly as digital platforms become breeding grounds for misleading and harmful information.
Speaking during the launch, TCRA’s Head of Communications and Public Relations, Mr Rolf Kibaja, said the campaign will empower Tanzanians to identify and stop the spread of falsehoods.
“Our society is increasingly affected by unofficial and misleading content, which can cause panic and disrupt peace,” he said. “This campaign encourages citizens to verify content before sharing and to delete false information immediately.”
The campaign will involve a series of public education initiatives, including community outreach, media engagements, and digital platforms. TCRA aims to promote responsible digital habits and reduce legal risks associated with spreading fake content.
Mr Kibaja noted that the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made it easier to produce and distribute fake content that appears authentic. He urged the public to use tools such as reverse image searches and fact-checking websites to verify content.
“Watch for red flags like inaccurate statistics, grammatical errors, and unusual sources or names. These are often signs of fake content,” he said.
TCRA Senior Archivist Mr Raphael Mwango said today’s generation accesses information much faster and from an early age, particularly through smartphones. He noted that the campaign is designed to protect young people and their families from social, reputational, and legal harm.
“Fake news can affect mental health, damage reputations, fuel social division, and in some cases even lead to loss of life,” he said. “That’s why awareness and digital responsibility are crucial.”
Mr Kibaja also warned against the circulation of unofficial election results, particularly ahead of the October General Election, saying such actions could incite tension and conflict.
He reminded the public to use official tools provided by TCRA: SMS 15040 to report scam numbers, dial *106# to verify registered SIM card details, and call 100 to reach verified service providers.
“Futa Delete Kabisa is more than a slogan. It’s a national call to action—protecting our peace, safety, and dignity in the digital age,” he said.
