Nelson University, a private Christian university in Waxahachie, Texas, has disclosed a ransomware attack in which an unauthorized party gained access to its systems and allegedly obtained sensitive data belonging to an undisclosed number of individuals.

The attack took place between March 21, 2025, and April 6, 2025. Approximately 10 days after the intrusion window closed, a ransomware group known as Qilin claimed responsibility on the dark web, asserting it had obtained university data and threatening to publish it. The claimed data was subsequently posted on the Tor network on April 16, 2025, raising concerns about potential misuse of personal information.

The university has not publicly identified the specific categories of data confirmed as exposed. The information potentially at risk may include names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and financial account information. The total number of individuals affected has not been disclosed. The breach was reported to the California Attorney General on June 15, 2026.

Nelson University has established a dedicated, confidential toll-free response line staffed by professionals familiar with the incident. The line operates Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time, excluding holidays. The university is also offering credit monitoring services to affected individuals and has provided guidance on placing a security freeze on credit files.

Founded in 1927 and located roughly 30 miles south of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Nelson University offers associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees across disciplines including Bible, ministry, liberal arts, and professional fields. The institution emphasizes a Christian mission and the integration of biblical values throughout academic and campus life.

Shamis & Gentile P.A., a law firm specializing in data breach class action litigation, has announced it is investigating the incident.
