teiss – News – Ransomware attack on IDC Frontier affects nearly 500 organisations in Japan | #ransomware | #cybercrime

IDC Frontier, a Japan-based cloud services provider, recently reported a significant ransomware attack that resulted in a major outage at a data center supporting the country’s eastern region.

Headquartered in Tokyo, IDC Frontier is a SoftBank Group subsidiary providing data center and cloud services across Japan. Its offerings include IDCF Cloud, a cloud platform used for deploying and managing IT infrastructure, colocation facilities, managed Kubernetes and container services, rental servers, domain registration, and hybrid cloud networking.

In a data security notice on its website,, IDC Frontier said that on October 7, it detected unauthorised activity to some systems of its cloud service, IDCF Cloud. The company immediately launched an investigation, with assistance from external cyber security experts, to determine the nature and scope of the incident.

It also took steps to secure the affected network and notified relevant law enforcement authorities about the incident.

“The investigation has revealed that a service disruption in East Japan Region 1 was caused by a ransomware attack from a third party. We are currently continuing to identify the precise cause and assess the scope of the impact. Additionally, we are verifying the security status of regions other than East Japan Region 1,” IDC Frontier said.

The cloud service provider added that the incident has so far affected 495 companies and local governments who use IDCF Cloud, causing disruptions to their  cloud-based operations and digital services.

To mitigate the impact of the incident and prevent further damage or potential data leakage, IDC Frontier isolated the affected systems, including “East Japan Region 1,” from its main network and completed the system shutdown. The company is currently working toidentify the attacker and assess the security of services operating in other regions.

Although IDC Frontier did not disclose the perpetrator’s identity, cybersecurity research firm Aviatrix reported that the perpetrators claimed to have encrypted 225 databases containing 3.6 PB of data, compromised 239 hypervisors, sealed 16,000 virtual machine disks, and wiped 554,153 snapshots within just seven minutes of breaching the East Japan Region 1 infrastructure.
