SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced a more than $1 billion settlement with Meta over the protection of children online.
Under the settlement, Meta will implement new safeguards for young users, including stricter age checks, a daily two-hour limit for teens and nighttime restrictions on notifications and other features.
Notifications will also be off by default during school hours unless changed by a parent, while likes and reactions will be hidden by default to reduce social comparison.
The settlement funds will support youth mental health services, crisis resources, digital literacy programs, after-school programs and grants for Texas schools.
Paxton said the agreement sets a new standard for online child safety. It is his third settlement with a Big Tech company worth more than $1 billion.
Paxton is also scheduled to go to trial against TikTok in fall 2026 as part of his efforts to protect children online.
