Texas state judge Cory Liu in the United States ruled on September 10 that TikTok violated the state’s consumer protection law by misleading users about content filtering for minors and the operation of the Restricted Mode feature. This was reported by Channel NewsAsia, citing Reuters.
Texas lawsuit
Texas filed a lawsuit against TikTok in January 2025. State authorities said that the platform presented itself as safe for children. According to the judge’s ruling, TikTok told users that it would remove materials that violated community guidelines.
At the same time, Texas alleged that the company internally classified some such content as difficult to find rather than prohibited. This allowed such materials to remain on the platform. Judge Liu agreed that this practice violated the state’s consumer protection law.

Further consideration of the case
The judge also noted that Texas proved that Restricted Mode did not match its stated characteristics: the feature gave minors access to content that the company had promised to filter out. The office of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said that the case would proceed to trial, where possible fines and other measures would be determined. According to Paxton’s office, the trial is expected to be scheduled next month.
TikTok did not immediately comment on a Reuters request sent outside business hours.
