According to a 2025 report from Safe Home, between 2019 and 2024 there were more than 42,000 registered sex offenders in the United States. In 2024, Idaho had more than 5,200 people in the court system charged with these types of crimes against minors.
The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) released a reality show dealing with sting operations aimed at exposing child predators in 2004, and its host was journalist Chris Hansen. The show quickly became a ratings grabber.
