CHENNAI: Four men were arrested for the murder of a 29-year-old man, Pradeep Raj, employed in Chennai harbour, who was hacked to death on West Mada Street in Thiruvottiyur on Wednesday night following a dispute over a Rs 9 lakh loan.Police recovered his body, and it is kept at the morgue in Govt Stanley Hospital.

The incident occurred around 8.40 pm in front of a house on West Mada Street.Pradeep Raj, son of Dilli Babu, was walking along the street when a group led by Naveen Kumar, son of Navaneetham, attacked him with knives. He suffered injuries to his head and face and died at the spot.Thiruvottiyur police led by inspector of police Alex traced and arrested Narayanan alias Naveen Kumar (32), Hari Krishnan (21), Jabar (24), and Lokesh (27) from Madhavaram within a few hours after the murder. Police seized knives from the suspects.Police said the murder followed a dispute between the two families over a loan.Pradeep Raj’s mother, Rani, had borrowed Rs 9 lakh from Navaneetham but had not repaid it. When Navaneetham went to demand repayment on July 26, police said Pradeep Raj, Rani, his brother-in-law Sathish, sister Lavanya and father Dilli Babu threatened her.Navaneetham later filed a complaint after consuming thyroid medication and receiving treatment at a private hospital.A case was registered and Pradeep Raj was arrested and remanded in judicial custody. He was subsequently released on station bail.Police said a tense situation prevailed between the two families. Meanwhile, police summoned both parties – Navaneetham and Pradeepraj’s mother Rani – to the Thiruvottiyur police station for an enquiry on Sept 8 over concerns about possible conflict.The cops also gave instructions to both parties to resolve their problem as the cops wanted to have peaceful Vinayagar Chathurthi celebrations.Subsequently, after the enquiry, Pradeep Raj threatened Navaneetham’s family. He also submitted a formal complaint against Navaneetham’s family and sought action against a relative.The four arrested suspects were being interrogated. They will be produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody on Thursday evening.
