The Town of Sutton is investigating a cybersecurity incident on its network that could impact its public schools.
Town and school district officials took steps to contain the problem as soon as it was discovered, officials said in a notice on Wednesday. Law enforcement and cybersecurity and forensic experts are working to determine the scope of the issue and what data may have been impacted.
Municipal services are still operating and officials are looking into ways to improve security.
“As part of the ongoing investigation, the Town and its advisors are conducting a comprehensive review of potentially affected data. If the investigation determines that personal information was involved and that notification is required under applicable law, affected individuals will be notified as appropriate,” the statement read.
Additional details were not immediately available.
Sutton is the latest Massachusetts community dealing with a cybersecurity issue. Springfield Public Schools canceled classes last week after a cyberattack compromised student and staff information.
And on Sept. 7, officials in Everett announced a data breach that caused the closure of Everett City Hall.
Authorities have not said if any of the incidents are related.
