According to Reuters, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell held an urgent meeting with bank chief executives this week. The purpose was to alert them to cybersecurity risks associated with a new artificial intelligence model developed by Anthropic.

The company recently launched its Mythos model but has not released it widely due to concerns it might uncover previously unknown security flaws. Anthropic stated the model has the ability to find and take advantage of weaknesses in major operating systems and web browsers.

The meeting took place at the Treasury Department in Washington on Tuesday. Its goal was to make certain banks understand the potential dangers from the Mythos model and similar technologies and are implementing defensive measures. The invitation was extended while many leaders of the largest U.S. banks were already in Washington for other scheduled events.

Anthropic has indicated that access to the Mythos model will be restricted to approximately forty technology firms, which include Microsoft and Google. The startup has also been engaged in continuous discussions with U.S. government officials regarding the model’s capabilities.

Reports indicate the chief executives of Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Goldman Sachs attended the session. The CEO of JPMorgan was not able to participate. Goldman Sachs and the Federal Reserve declined to provide comments on the matter. The Treasury Department, the involved banks, and Anthropic did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
