Two bag prison sentences for cybercrime in Lagos | #cybercrime | #infosec


The Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Damelda Damilola Sodiq and Samuel Paul Osayande to one year imprisonment each for cybercrime.

The duo were arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the Ipaja Command area of Lagos in May and subsequently arraigned on June 27.

During investigations, it was revealed that Sodiq and Osayande had three bank accounts domiciled in United Bank of Africa (UBA), Opay and Moniepoint, as well as several email accounts , which they used to defraud unsuspecting victims.

Sodiq was accused of posing as an American actress on TikTok, bearing the name “Regan Kay kaufman”. Osayande was accused of a similar crime. According to the charge against him, Osayande posed as a Spanish Television presenter bearing the name “Jorge Javier Vazquez”.

The duo pleaded guilty to the charges. The prosecution counsel, Muhammad Sani Nuhu, revealed that an iPhone 11 was recovered from Sodiq, while an IPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone Xr were recovered from Paul upon arrest.

Nuhu added that Sodiq confessed that he was into modelling scam and that he had benefited the sum of $400, while Osayande confessed he was into romance scam adding that he had benefited the sum of $200 from the fraud.

Justice Owoeye convicted and sentenced Sodiq to one year imprisonment, with an option of fine of N150,000. Osayande was sentenced to one year imprisonment, with an option of fine of N100,000.

Osayande and Sodiq were ordered by the court to forfeit their iPhone 11 Pro Max , iPhone XR, iPhone 11 and bank drafts to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
