U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions led a school safety meeting with Central Texas officials to discuss educational facility security concerns.
WACO, Texas — U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions convened a school safety meeting on Friday, July 25, bringing together a coalition of local law enforcement officials, school district leaders and county judges from across Central Texas to address ongoing security concerns in educational facilities.
The gathering represents the second major school safety summit in the region, the first taking place three years after the tragic Uvalde shooting that claimed 21 lives and sparked nationwide conversations about protecting students and educators.
McLennan County Judge Scott Felton said safety is their number one priority.
“Public safety is very important to us, especially when it comes to protecting our children,” said Felton.
U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions said parents should feel confident when dropping their children off at school.
“For parents to have a belief as they drop their student off that that student will receive a top flight education in their school, that that student will be greeted by professionals who are able to do their job with the knowledge that they will be backed up by the law enforcement,” said Sessions.
The collaborative effort includes representation from Region 12, which encompasses 77 independent school districts and 9 charter schools throughout Central Texas.
Sessions and fellow representatives pledged continued cooperation on school safety measures, with the congressman asserting that “all districts will have a safe environment.”
The meeting focused on establishing comprehensive safety protocols, improving communication between agencies, and ensuring resources are available to maintain secure learning environments for students across the region.
