The U.S. military has created a task force aimed at speeding the integration of artificial intelligence into its capabilities.
Politico reported that officials are worried about the potential threat powerful AI tools could pose in the hands of adversaries or bad actors. They also want to ensure that the U.S. doesn’t fall behind in the use of the tools in offensive hacking operations.
An email from Gen. Joshua Rudd, who leads the National Security Agency and Cyber Command, stated that the task force will study, among other things, how to deploy AI into missions safely, including “high-side” systems that contain the nation’s secrets.
The task force creation comes after Anthropic announced that its Mythos Preview AI-frontier model was too dangerous to be released to the public. Essentially, the company said that the model was its most aligned in terms of working in the interest of human goals, but so powerful that if it did stray or was misused, the damage could be enormous.
“Mythos Preview has already found thousands of high-severity vulnerabilities, including some in every major operating system and web browser,” the company stated. “Given the rate of AI progress, it will not be long before such capabilities proliferate, potentially beyond actors who are committed to deploying them safely. The fallout—for economies, public safety, and national security—could be severe.”
OpenAI has also warned of AI’s hacking potential. In March, OpenAI and the Department of War entered into an agreement for deployment of its tools within the military. The company said that democracies had to stay at the forefront of the technology, given the threat it could pose in the hands of an adversary.
“We believe strongly in democracy. Given the importance of this technology, we believe that the only good path forward requires deep collaboration between AI efforts and the democratic process. We also believe our technology is going to introduce new risks in the world, and we want the people defending the United States to have the best tools,” the company stated.
Politico reported that the rapid advancement of AI technology has led the Trump administration to try to come up with some kind of system that will have companies submit models to federal testing before releasing them to the public.
The task force is not part of that process, but rather an attempt by the military to implement AI into their systems and missions quickly, but safely, Politico reported.
“AI tools are rapidly becoming essential for detecting threats, prioritizing vulnerabilities, accelerating decision-making and conducting both defensive and offensive cyber operations faster than our adversaries,” Lt. Gen. Charles Moore told Politico. “The Task Force can help integrate AI across operations, training, intelligence and cyber defense while ensuring the United States maintains analytic superiority over our adversaries.”
