The United Kingdom and France will jointly host a high-level summit this week aimed at advancing plans for a multinational mission to secure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, amid rising tensions in the region.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the initiative will focus on establishing a “peaceful multinational mission” designed to safeguard key maritime routes. He emphasized that the effort will remain strictly defensive and independent of parties involved in the ongoing conflict, with deployment expected “as soon as circumstances permit.”
The announcement follows heightened regional developments, including remarks from US President Donald Trump regarding a blockade on Iranian ports, which have further escalated concerns over maritime security in the region.
The summit, to be held this week, is part of broader efforts by London and Paris to coordinate an international response aimed at restoring stability and protecting global shipping lanes. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the ongoing disruption in the Strait is “deeply damaging,” warning of its impact on global trade and living costs.
Starmer added that the UK has already engaged multiple nations in discussions to support freedom of navigation, and stressed the need for a coordinated, independent multinational plan once conditions allow.
Macron also highlighted the need for wider regional stability, including addressing security concerns related to Iran’s nuclear and missile activities, regional tensions, and the situation in Lebanon, while reaffirming France’s commitment to diplomatic solutions.
