UK’s New Regulations Ban Important Institutions To Pay Ransomware Ransom | #ransomware | #cybercrime

JAKARTA – The British government has prepared firm steps in the form of regulatory proposals to combat cybercrime, in which government organizations or institutions are prohibited from paying ransomware ransoms.

This ban will apply to the public sector and important infrastructure operators such as the National Health Service (NHS), local governments, to schools.

The goal is to weaken the business model of cybercriminals while reducing the attractiveness of important services as targets of attack.

“This ban will target business models that support cybercriminals’ activities and make critical services that people rely on a less attractive target for ransomware groups,” the UK government wrote on its official website.

As for businesses that are not included in the ban, they are required to report their intention to pay the ransom to the government.

The government will provide guidance, including if the payments risk violating international sanctions, particularly against Russia-based criminal groups.

In addition to the ban and reporting, the government is also developing a mandatory reporting system for all ransomware attacks, in order to assist law enforcement officials in obtaining important intelligence to identify and arrest perpetrators.

“By working with industry to advance these measures, we are sending a clear signal that Britain is united in fighting ransomware,” said Britain’s Security Secretary, Dan Jarvis.

He also emphasized that in addition to the proposed new measures, the government continues to urge organizations across the country to strengthen their ability to maintain operations in the event of successful ransomware attacks.

“This includes having offline reserves, a plan that has been tested to operate without IT over a long period of time, and a strategy that has been well trained to restore the system from reserves,” he said.
