Ms Ghada Waly, UNODC Executive Director
Since 2019, UNODC has been working closely with the IPU on legislative assistance to parliamentarians, primarily on counter-terrorism issues. The newly signed agreement advances the partnership beyond counter-terrorism to include the reflection of UNODC mandate areas such as trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants, cybercrime, firearms trafficking, anti-corruption, violence against women in politics and the public space, and research and data.
During the two-year implementation period, both Organizations will conduct awareness-raising workshops and information campaigns for parliamentarians, develop model laws and strategy tools, support the creation of inter-parliamentary networks, and organize regular summits to promote parliamentary leadership.
The Letter of Intent, initiating the agreed upon Concept Note, was signed by Ms. Ghada Waly, Executive Director of UNODC in Vienna, and Mr. Martin Chungong, Secretary-General of the IPU in Geneva, through a virtual ceremony held on 3 June.
