The US Department of Justice said it has joined forces with Germany and Canada to take down infrastructure behind four major botnets that infected more than three million devices globally.
The networks — Aisuru, KimWolf, JackSkid and Mossad — were used to launch large-scale distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, targeting systems worldwide, including networks linked to the US Department of Defence.
Authorities said most compromised devices were part of the Internet of Things, such as webcams, routers and digital video recorders, which were hijacked to carry out hundreds of thousands of attacks. In some cases, victims were extorted for payments.
The coordinated operation, conducted simultaneously across the three countries, also targeted individuals behind the cyber networks, marking a significant step in disrupting global cybercrime infrastructure.
The crackdown was supported by major technology firms including Amazon Web Services, Google, PayPal and Nokia, alongside Europol through its long-running “PowerOff” initiative targeting DDoS-related cybercrime.
Officials said the takedown underscores growing international cooperation to counter increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
