The commission’s website was offline as it worked to resolve the issue.

The US Federal Election Commission has been targeted by a hacking attack, the organization has confirmed. It did not name a source of the attacks, but its website has been taken offline as they look to resolve the matter.
As reported by Reuters, the US Federal Election Commission confirmed the attempted attack today. “At this time, the FEC’s electronic filing system is currently offline and our IT staff are actively working to restore service.”

The hack comes just days before the midterm elections in the United States, but the site’s outages aren’t expected to have any impact as it’s not used to cast ballots. However, it could disrupt the analysis of data regarding ad spending on political campaigns.
The news comes on the heels of the PHP security issues, which left thousands of websites vulnerable to attacks. That said, the Federal Election Commission has not cited PHP as a cause for the outage.
