VICKSBURG, Miss. —
The city of Vicksburg is dealing with a ransomware attack that has temporarily shut down its computer systems, causing disruptions to city services.
The fire and police departments have not been affected, but residents trying to make in-person payments for utilities have encountered issues. Vicksburg is working with cybersecurity specialists and others to determine who is behind the attack.
At this time, the city is not certain what information may have been accessed.
“People want to pay their water or gas bills, but they are not able to do so because we cannot look up their accounts. The best thing is to wait until we can do those things and we have stalled any disconnections or penalties and late fees because we are unable to serve those accounts right now,” Mayor Willis Thompson said.
City workers are still being paid, but Thompson said the most difficult part of the situation is the inability to conduct business as usual.
