THE TWO VIRGINIAS (WVVA) – A new analysis from data destruction company Whitaker Brothers using FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center data suggests cybercrime victims in West Virginia report lower average losses per complaint than most states, while Virginia ranks closer to the middle.
The study ranked states by average financial loss per complaint, calculated by dividing total reported cybercrime losses by the number of complaints filed.
The data shows West Virginia ranked 48th nationally for average loss per complaint, with total reported losses of $24,196,661 across 2,594 complaints, an average of $9,328 per complaint.
Virginia ranked 25th, with $317,406,595 in total losses across 17,466 complaints, averaging $18,173 per complaint, according to the analysis.
What the ranking means
The ranking focuses on average loss per complaint, not how often cybercrime happens. A lower average could reflect a mix of factors, including the types of scams being reported, reporting behavior, and the size of individual losses.
