Visakhapatnam: Senior citizens are losing lakhs to cybercrooks after falling for a fake offer of a private bank’s pension card that promised travel discounts and exclusive banking benefits.Recently, a 72-year-old senior citizen from Vizag city lost over Rs 8.5 lakh to cyber crooks after falling for a fake offer of a private bank’s retired pension card.The police said the senior citizen came across an advertisement (pension card of a private bank) while he was browsing a social media network.Since the victim held an account with the same bank, he believed the offer was genuine. He opened a link in the advertisement, followed the instructions and entered his personal and bank details.A few minutes after entering the details, the senior citizen’s bank accounts and cards were compromised by cyber fraudsters, and amounts (Rs 8.5 lakh) were withdrawn without the consent of the senior citizen.A case has been registered at Vizag cybercrime police station, and the investigation is underway. The police suspect the link clicked by the victim was an APK file resembling the bank’s genuine portal.The police said the cyber crooks are posing advertisements on social media and making calls to netizens for the promotion of the fake pension card, citing benefits for senior citizens.The fraudsters used to send the victims some links and ask them to follow the instructions. The link opened a webpage resembling the bank’s official portal, where the victim was prompted to enter personal details, including his name, bank account number, and a few others. Soon after clicked it, the fraudsters gained access to the victim’s device, accessed their banking applications, and siphoned off the money. The police said senior citizens have been falling in the pension card scams.
