Two security guards employed by a cash-in-transit company escaped unharmed during an armed robbery at Debi Place in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident unfolded shortly after one of the guards collected cash from a shop in the area. He was exiting the store with a cash bag while his colleague remained inside the cash van.

According to a store manager, who identified himself only as Patel, at least two armed suspects approached the guard, disarmed him and took the money.

“As it happened, a vehicle reversed towards them. The gunmen got into the car and sped off. No shots were fired,” he said.

The guards declined to comment, while police at the scene referred media queries to provincial authorities and cautioned against taking photographs.

Patel said the shop had previously been targeted in a similar robbery.

“We were traumatised by that incident, and this brings it all back. We’ve been operating here for about 14 years, and such incidents are not common,” he said.
