Weirton church youth summit warns teens about dangers of drugs and alcohol

More than 70 people gathered at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Weirton, W.Va., for a youth summit aimed at educating children and teens about the dangers of alcohol and drugs.

The event featured four speakers who delivered inspirational messages, each offering a different perspective on substance abuse and its impact. Organizers said the goal of the summit was to help keep young people safe.

“Most households have been touched by drug and alcohol abuse at some point. Me being a foster parent in the city of Weirton, I can see how it has affected our area and our community, and we want to prevent that,” organizer Rosie McCalister said.

Organizer Tamara Young urged parents to stay involved in their children’s lives.

“We have a lot of young people nowadays and stuff and I think the parents should watch and learn and watch their kids and stuff because there are a lot of dangers out there,” Young said.

Organizers said they hope to make the youth summit an annual event and plan to continue the effort for as long as they can.
