Welcome Savings Bank has confirmed that a hacking attack resulted in the leak of up to 2,200 corporate customer records. The breach extends the damage to the savings bank sector amid a series of data leak incidents across South Korea’s financial industry.

According to financial industry sources on the 4th, Welcome Savings Bank identified the hacking attack targeting corporate customer data during its own internal inspection the previous day and reported it to financial authorities. The leaked information has been identified as including corporate names, names of corporate contacts, email addresses, and phone numbers.

The information compromised in this incident pertains to corporate customers rather than individual retail customers. Welcome Savings Bank stated, “We plan to individually notify corporate contacts whose personal information, including phone numbers, was hacked to prevent further harm,” adding, “We will promptly address web vulnerabilities and other issues to ensure safe financial transactions.”

The savings bank is currently investigating the exact circumstances of the breach and the full scope of the damage.

The Welcome Savings Bank incident comes amid a chain of data leak revelations across South Korea’s financial sector. It follows the disclosure that approximately 25,000 customers’ information was leaked at Shinhan Bank, with similar incidents subsequently confirmed at KB Kookmin Bank, Hana Bank, Busan Bank, and Hyundai Capital. In the savings bank sector, Yegaram Savings Bank previously suffered a breach involving approximately 40,000 customer records.

South Korean financial authorities have urgently convened heads of financial industry associations and executives of affected financial institutions, and are inspecting security vulnerabilities in externally accessible computer systems and assessing whether additional damage has occurred.
