Pakistan is witnessing a sharp rise in WhatsApp hacking incidents, with many users falling victim to fraud and blackmail schemes.

Recent reports indicate a significant increase in such cases, prompting cybersecurity experts to urge the public to exercise extreme caution particularly when sharing one-time passwords (OTPs) or verification codes.

Hackers are reportedly targeting mobile and social media users through calls from unknown numbers, often posing as representatives of courier companies. Victims are told they have a parcel awaiting delivery and are asked to share a verification code sent to their phone to complete the process.

Experts warn that once the OTP is shared, the victim’s WhatsApp account is immediately compromised.

The hacked accounts are then used to contact friends and family, with scammers fabricating emergency situations and requesting urgent financial assistance. This method has led to considerable financial losses for many individuals.

Cybersecurity specialists say elderly individuals and homemakers are particularly vulnerable due to limited awareness of digital safety practices. In one reported case, a victim said hackers used his account to message thousands of contacts, resulting in multiple people transferring money in his name.

Authorities and experts have stressed that users should never share OTPs or personal information with unknown callers, emphasizing that greater public awareness is essential to curb the growing threat of cybercrime.
