(KSTP) – Winona County says it paid more than $128,000 after a January ransomware attack as officials continue investigating a separate attack found in April.

The attack was discovered Jan. 22. More than a dozen cybersecurity experts were called in to help.

County officials said the ransom was paid with help from the county’s insurance carrier to help protect personal information and resume county services. Everyone who was impacted was notified in May.

Officials said they are still investigating a second unrelated ransomware attack that was found in April. They said they do not yet know what information was involved or who was impacted.

The county said strengthening the security of its digital network is a priority.
