The Youngstown Police Department said it will continue its automated photo speed enforcement program in schools throughout the city, starting on Tuesday, September 1. The primary objective of the initiative is to enhance safety for students, parents, teachers, and the public who travel through our school zones.

Photo speed cameras will be operational and enforced on school days when children are present, and the school zone beacons are flashing. Officials said if you’re driving through school zones during school hours, these cameras will be active. Drivers who exceed the posted school zone speed limit by 10 mph or more will receive a citation in the mail.

The program has been successful so far, resulting in a reduction of 1,10 speeding vehicles across school zones, according to officials. They said this translates to a remarkable 95.5% decrease from the peak of 44,479 speeding vehicles before the program’s launch.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a concerning 64% of child pedestrian fatalities in traffic crashes occur during weekdays, specifically between 6 a.m. Monday and 6 p.m. Friday. (Source: NHTSA Traffic Safety Facts) Officials said the statistics are clear: the difference in survival rates between a child struck by a car traveling at 40 mph and 20 mph is a staggering 80%.

To ensure the safety of our students, teachers, and community, authorities are asking residents to please pay close attention to the posted signage and yellow flashing beacons that indicate the reduced speed limit of 20 mph in each school zone. The Youngstown Police Department said it is dedicated to actively working to slow down drivers in our school zones.

List of photo enforced school zones with their reduced 20 MPH speed times are as follows:
