Around 400 pupils participated in child safety workshops | #childsafety | #kids | #chldern | #parents | #schoolsafey

Around 400 Year 6 pupils from ten primary schools engaged in interactive workshops, all part of the ‘Junior Citizen’ scheme.

The initiative, held at Weymouth Football Club, aimed to cover areas like railway safety, first aid, anti-social behaviour, health and wellbeing, online conduct, and water safety.

The workshops, led by professionals from various agencies including Network Rail, South Western Ambulance Service, British Transport Police, Dorset Police, Weymouth in the Community, and the RNLI, provided practical demonstrations and discussions in real-life scenarios.

The event aimed at filling gaps in the curriculum, equipping children with skills to handle situations involving danger or emergency.

It was made possible by the key sponsor, Network Rail, and Weymouth Football Club, which provided the venue for free.

Thanks were extended to Andy Yates, Community Officer at Weymouth in the Community, for his support, as well as the club’s team for their hospitality.

A VIP Day was held on Monday, June 15, graced by the Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr David Harris, and other special guests.

These included Angela Prescott, HSSE Director, South Western Railway/Network Rail and colleagues, Tom McNamee, Infrastructure Director; Tom Desmond, Operations Director; Stuart Tautz, Route Operations Performance and Projects Manager; Marcia Burnett, Community Safety Manager Wessex Route; Superintendent Andy Kermack, Subdivisional Commander Western; and Richard Willis, Wessex Route Embedded Inspector, British Transport Police.

Among the schools in attendance were Atlantic Academy, Portland, and St John’s CE Primary School, Weymouth.

The workshops provided a unique opportunity for pupils to learn vital skills from professionals through practical demonstrations.

The scheme, focusing on often-overlooked curriculum topics, aimed to prepare children for real-life situations, teaching them not just how to react in emergencies, but also how to prevent them.

The importance of teamwork and respect were also highlighted, with the scheme encouraging children to help each other and work together in challenging situations.
