DICKINSON — Parents and caregivers will have an opportunity to ensure their children’s car seats are installed correctly during a free car safety seat checkup hosted by the Dickinson Police Department and community partners.
The event will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at Sax Motor Company, 52 21st St. E., in Dickinson. The Dickinson Police Department is partnering with Sax Motor Company, the North Dakota Highway Patrol and Community Action Head Start to offer the service.
Certified child passenger safety technicians will inspect car seats to determine whether they are appropriate for a child’s age, weight and developmental level, meet current safety standards, are free of recalls and damage, and are properly secured in both the vehicle and the seat.
“Most parents are trying to protect their children by using car safety seats, but nearly 90 percent of car seats are installed and used incorrectly,” Dickinson Police Chief Joe Cianni said in a news release. He noted that improper installation can increase the risk of serious injury in a crash.
Cianni encouraged families to take advantage of the free inspections rather than waiting until after a crash to discover a car seat was improperly installed.
Each inspection will take about 30 minutes. Parents are encouraged to bring the car seat instruction manual and their vehicle owner’s manual. If possible, the child who normally rides in the seat should also attend. Participating families will receive free safety packets.
