Chandigarh Cyber Crime Police have arrested two persons from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, in connection with a WhatsApp impersonation scam in which fraudsters posing as a company’s Managing Director duped an accounts officer into transferring Rs 1.90 crore.

The accused, Dinesh Bharti (40) and Kuldeep Singh (36), were arrested in the case registered here on April 17, under Sections 319(2), 318(4), 336(3), 338, 340(2) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

According to the complaint, an employee of the victim company received a WhatsApp message from a fraudster using the Managing Director’s display picture, who claimed to be busy in a meeting and instructed the accounts officer to urgently transfer Rs 1.90 crore to a designated bank account. The employee complied. When a second message sought further funds, the employee, unable to arrange the amount, contacted the MD directly, who denied sending any such messages, exposing the fraud.

Investigation traced the transferred amount to a current account of BTO Stepmile Reality Pvt Ltd in Noida, opened by the accused using fake names and forged documents to conceal their identity.

Acting on technical and field investigation, police conducted raids in Delhi-NCR and Noida and arrested Bharti, who had opened the account under the fake name Arvind Chaudhary and from whom two mobile phones were recovered, and Singh, who used the fake name Bantu Singh and had one mobile phone recovered from him.

Police said the investigation found the accused had used forged Aadhaar and PAN cards with fabricated identities to open the bank accounts used for the fraudulent transactions. During interrogation, they disclosed acting on a commission basis in association with another person identified as the mastermind of the conspiracy.

Both accused were sent to judicial custody after two days of police remand. Further investigation is under way to trace and arrest the remaining accused, police said.
