Marshall Security Special Operations Team, SAPS District Trio Tracing Team, Metro Trio Team, Provincial CI (MDOC), and Homeland Security set up a joint operation across the Sydenham, Durban Central, Mayville, and Berea areas following a spate of business robberies reported over the past few weeks.
Members gathered intelligence and concentrated their efforts in and around the identified areas.
On 10 September 2026, at approximately 14h00, members received information regarding a business robbery in progress on Felix Dlamini Road in the Mayville area. Members immediately proceeded to the address.
While responding to the scene, further information was received that three armed suspects had entered the business and held up those inside the premises, taking members of the public’s cellphones and belongings, as well as cash and other items from the business. The suspects then fled the scene in a white Volkswagen Polo hatchback.
While proceeding to the scene, members spotted a white Volkswagen Polo hatchback fitting the description, occupied by four suspects and travelling at high speed towards Jan Smuts Highway.
Members immediately began following the vehicle and instructed the occupants to stop. Upon noticing the responding members, the suspects continued to flee at high speed towards Bidston Road.
As the Polo reached the intersection of Jan Smuts Highway and Bidston Road, the occupants brought the vehicle to an abrupt stop and opened fire on the pursuing members.
Members immediately returned fire in self-defence.
During the gunfire, the Marshall Security Special Operations Team’s vehicle was struck multiple times during the confrontation. The suspects then sped off along Bidston Road towards Mary Thiphe Street, resulting in a high-speed pursuit.
The suspects subsequently lost control of their vehicle and crashed at the intersection of Mary Thiphe Street and Caronia Road.
After the vehicle came to a stop, the suspects exited and again opened fire on the responding members. Members stopped their vehicle, took cover, and returned fire.
Three suspects were killed during the shootout, while a fourth suspect, who had been driving the Polo, sustained a gunshot wound to his arm and was apprehended.
Several firearms were recovered from the scene, including a firearm belonging to the security officer who was disarmed and robbed during the business robbery. Cash, cellphones, and other items taken during the robbery were also recovered.
Further inspection of the suspects’ Volkswagen Polo established that the registration plates displayed on the vehicle were false.
The vehicle and all recovered exhibits were subsequently booked in at Cato Manor SAPS.
All necessary role players attended the scene, and further investigation established that the same suspects were allegedly linked to several other business robbery cases.
