(NewsNation) — On Tuesday, a group known as “ShinyHunters” said they breached the FBI and stole information on current and past agents.
The group posted a screenshot of a vandalized FBI job site as evidence and said the site had information on roughly 5,000 agents.
“The FBI is aware of claims regarding unauthorized activity affecting FBIjobs.gov and is currently investigating,” the bureau said in a statement to NewsNation.

Former FBI official Cynthia Kaiser told Reuters breaches like the one claimed by ShinyHunters are harmful as criminals can use them to expose and pressure the people investigating them.
The group said the hacking was in response to an FBI announcement in May that detailed the group’s methods and advised targets not to pay, according to a statement on the group’s dark website.
