A 71-year-old Mission man was allegedly scammed out of $36,000.
According to Mission RCMP’s weekly “Community Connection” crime recap, the man told police that he received emails and phone calls from someone claiming to be from the FBI.
The scammer told the local senior that he would receive various gifts, but had to send gift cards to an FBI agent in order to receive them.
“As we approach the holiday season, this is a good time to take a few minutes to talk to any potentially vulnerable people in your life about various scams, including any circumstance where a stranger directs them to purchase gift cards,” RCMP said.
The detachment said attempted scams where no money has been lost can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Those who lose money in a scam or provide personal information are urged to call local police.
Another scam was reported in a grocery store parking lot in Mission on Thursday (Oct. 1)
Police say a man driving a black Audi SUV with a Quebec licence plate was telling people that he ran out of gas. He offered to sell gold jewelry in exchange for gas money.
However, a citizen recognized the scam and called police.
“This is a common scam – someone claiming to be down on their luck, often with children by their side – and offering to sell gold or other valuables at a steep discount for cash so they can get back home (the gold inevitably turns out to be fake). If you are approached in this manner, walk away, obtain the suspect’s license plate number from a safe distance if possible, and call police immediately,” RCMP said.
The man already drove away when police arrived to patrol the area.
“Which was strange, given that he claimed to be out of gas,” police said.
