Magna Hospitality Group, a privately held hotel real estate investment firm headquartered in Warwick, Rhode Island, disclosed a data breach after an unauthorized actor copied files from its computer systems.
The company said the intruder accessed certain systems between May 22 and May 24, 2025, and copied files during that window. Magna discovered the suspicious activity May 24, 2025, launched an investigation, reviewed the affected files to determine what personal information they contained and whom it belonged to, added security measures and notified federal law enforcement.
The breach was reported Oct. 13, 2026, to the attorneys general of California, New Hampshire and Texas and to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, roughly 17 months after Magna discovered the activity. The filings show 1,727 Massachusetts residents and 1,298 Texans were affected.
The ransomware group Qilin claimed responsibility. On Oct. 22, 2025, it posted on its dark web portal on the Tor network, saying it had obtained 385 GB of data from Magna. That is the group’s claim, and Magna’s notification letter does not mention ransomware.
The information involved varies by person and may include names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account information, medical information and health insurance information. Each notification letter lists a person’s name plus the data elements that apply to that individual.
Magna is offering complimentary access to Experian IdentityWorks, a credit monitoring and identity theft protection service. The enrollment deadline is printed in each person’s letter, and Magna said it cannot enroll people on their behalf. The company set up a call line for questions, open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Central time, excluding major U.S. holidays.
