A classroom lesson on the importance of reporting potential threats became an unexpected real-world exercise at Evans Middle School this week when a note written during the lesson sparked a police investigation. In a letter sent to families Friday, Principal Jessica Slaton said the note, which read, “I’m shooting up the school this Friday,” originated during a lesson Wednesday about recognizing and reporting potential safety concerns.A student found the crumpled note on a classroom floor Wednesday morning and showed it to another student. The second student reported the note at the end of the school day Thursday.School administrators contacted the school resource officer, additional law enforcement officers and school system administrators. Families were notified Thursday evening.According to Slaton, the note was written during a state-approved safety lesson in which students were asked to write examples of statements or situations they should report if they saw or heard them. The note was discarded and later found in the same classroom.Slaton said the investigation determined that no purposeful threat had been made against the school or its students. The Newnan Police Department is continuing its investigation as a precaution, Slaton said.Slaton encouraged parents to remind their children to report potential safety concerns immediately to a trusted adult, school administrator or law enforcement officer. The letter did not indicate whether the student who wrote the note had been identified or whether any disciplinary action was taken.
