Join fight against drugs, cybercrime: IGP to youth | #cybercrime | #infosec

Srinagar, Nov 05: Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Zone, Sujit Kumar, on Thursday made a direct appeal to the youth to join hands in fighting drug trafficking, cybercrime and other social challenges, assuring that anyone sharing information about illegal activities would be provided complete confidentiality and support. In his first media interaction since taking over as the Kashmir Police chief, Kumar said the action against drug networks, cyber fraudsters and traffic violators was being intensified but stressed that sustained public participation was essential to tackle these challenges.“Police are with you. I assure you that my team and the entire Kashmir Zone Police will support you. The youth must come forward and play a positive role in this fight,” he said while addressing a press conference at Police Control Room Srinagar. Kumaar urged the youth and civil society to come forward and support the police in its fight against drugs and cybercrimes.Sharing details of the anti-drug campaign, the IGP said police had registered more than 1,500 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and arrested nearly 2,000 persons during the current year.”We have recovered cash worth around Rs 1.10 crore and attached properties worth crores of rupees as part of efforts to dismantle the financial infrastructure supporting drug trafficking,” he said, adding that the police have also frozen 567 bank accounts linked to drug-related activities, involving approximately Rs 1.31 crore.Kumar said the crackdown was increasingly focusing on the financial networks behind drug trafficking, including suppliers, their associates and those facilitating the illegal trade. Action had also been intensified against networks operating in different parts of Kashmir, including downtown Srinagar, he said. The IGP appealed to people to share credible information about drug peddling and assured them that their identities would remain protected. “Anyone having information about drug peddling should come forward. If someone approaches a police station or a rehabilitation centre for help, we will facilitate them. Their identity will remain safe,” he said.Emphasising the need to address drug addiction through timely intervention, Kumar urged young people battling substance abuse to seek assistance rather than suffer in silence. He said the police would facilitate those approaching them or rehabilitation centres for help.‘Cyber fraud and mule accounts’Expressing concern over the growing involvement of youngsters in cyber fraud networks, the Kashmir Police chief cautioned them against allowing their bank accounts to be used for suspicious transactions or becoming conduits for money obtained through online scams.”Police have received complaints involving financial losses exceeding Rs 54 crore in recent cyber fraud cases. Around 13 to 14 per cent of the defrauded amount has been recovered, while more than Rs 7 crore has been returned to victims,” he said.Kumar said organised fraud networks were increasingly exploiting bank accounts belonging to individuals to route money, warning youngsters that allowing their accounts to be misused could draw them into criminal activities.“Cheating your own people is wrong. I appeal to the youth not to get involved in such activities or become part of these networks,” he said.He urged young people to remain cautious about offers promising easy money in exchange for sharing bank account details, ATM cards or access to financial transactions.‘Reckless biking under scanner’The IGP expressed concern over rash driving and reckless biking among youngsters, saying traffic violations endangered not only the lives of drivers but also pedestrians and other road users. He urged young people to follow traffic regulations and adopt responsible behaviour, stressing that road safety was a collective responsibility requiring cooperation from all sections of society.Kumar said the police were working on multiple fronts to ensure public safety and called upon the youth to become partners in building a safer and healthier society.
