WASHINGTON—The record $6.3-billion cyberattack on cryptocurrency exchange Binance has prompted federal banking regulators to contact U.S. banks about potential vulnerabilities and service disruptions, reflecting growing concerns that security breaches in the cryptocurrency industry could threaten the traditional financial system, according to Reuters.
Supervisors from the Federal Reserve and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency began contacting banks Monday, asking whether they had detected unusual activity or experienced service interruptions following the Oct. 29 attack, Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the inquiries. One bank reported no disruptions and few customer questions, while other institutions have been examining the breach and conducting cybersecurity diagnostics to determine whether similar attacks could compromise their systems. As CUToday.info reported, the attack involved hackers using a fraudulent job interview and malicious software to compromise Binance employees’ computers before gaining access to cryptocurrency wallets. The hackers also exploited an internal artificial intelligence tool during the multistage attack. The FBI has attributed the theft to a North Korean hacking group, an allegation North Korea has denied. Binance has pledged to reimburse affected customers.Reuters further reported that a cybersecurity team at one of the nation’s largest banks contacted Binance within hours of the attack and began preparing an internal report that could lead to additional security measures.
