Annual seminar educates Jefferson County seniors on romance scams, financial exploitation | #datingscams #romancescams

The Jefferson County Area Agency on Aging hosted its annual “scam jam” seminar at the Heritage House in Brookville on Wednesday.

The event brought together multiple agencies and community partners to educate older adults about financial exploitation from scammers.

Officials say seniors also took part in a ‘scam bingo,’ an interactive way to learn how to spot common schemes that deal with fraud.

Organizers say educating and keeping older adults one step ahead can help them recognize warning signs and provide protection.

“If a paramour is saying, ‘I’m going to come and see you, but I need you to send me money for a plane ticket.’ Or my child was just hospitalized. Can you send me money to help with the medical bills? So, the older adult is often craving that attention from this potential love interest,” explained agency executive director Molly McNutt.

Romance scams continue to be a big issue here in our county.
