Throughout July and August, Wood County’s Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn and Prosecuting Attorney Paul Dobson will present, “Frauds and Scams: Spot Them and Stop Them” at the county’s senior centers. Their first stop was Wednesday when they presented to more than 20 seniors in Rossford on staying safe from scammers.
The internet world of social media, AI, and other new technologies create potential for amazing advancements in all areas of our lives, from communication to medicine. However, they also pose dangers for the unwary. Fraudsters and thieves are constantly looking for new ways to separate innocent citizens from their money or personal information. Their attacks can be sophisticated.
They will pull on your heartstrings, play on your fear, or trick you into confusion.
Anyone can fall victim to an online, text, or telephone scam. Scammers can be tricky and intimidating. Learning their methods and angles will help you avoid turning over your money or private information to a bad actor.
Wasylyshyn and Dobson have years of experience coordinating efforts to combat and respond to scams. In their careers, they have seen rise of the internet as well as the rise of internet fraud, from the early days of eBay scams to the more recent cryptocurrency and government impersonation scams.
