ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — As metro Atlanta students head back to school, experts say a safe return to classes is a joint effort between students, parents, and local motorists. Keep these safety tips in mind as the new school year gets underway:
For Bus Riders & Pedestrians
- The 10-Foot Rule: Always stand at least three giant steps (6 to 10 feet) away from the curb while waiting for the school bus.
- Cross Safely: Never walk behind a school bus. If you must cross the street in front of the bus, walk at least 10 feet ahead of it so the driver can see you, and make eye contact before crossing.
- Walk in Groups: If walking or biking to school, travel with friends or in a group, and always use designated crosswalks and pedestrian paths.
For Motorists & Drivers
- Stop for School Buses: In Georgia, motorists traveling in both directions must stop for a school bus displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, unless traveling on a physically divided highway (with a grass median, concrete barrier, etc.).
- Observe School Zones: Slow down and strictly obey the posted speed limits in active school zones. High-definition camera systems are active in many metro Atlanta school zones to ticket speeding violators.
- Eliminate Distractions: Keep your eyes on the road. Handheld phone use is illegal in Georgia, and distracted driving is especially dangerous in areas with heavy student foot traffic.
For Parents & Guardians
- Establish Communication: Ensure your child knows their home address, emergency contact numbers, and who is authorized to pick them up from school.
- Label Belongings: Clearly label backpacks, lunchboxes, and jackets with your child’s name (but keep labels on the inside of backpacks for safety).
- Review Emergency Plans: Set a family plan for what to do if a child misses the bus or arrives home to an empty house.
