YOAKUM, Texas – TxDOT has launched its annual back-to-school safety campaign as students begin returning to campus later this month.

Parents are advised to teach their children the rules of the road if they walk to school. TxDOT recommends doing a “dry run” before classes begin so children know where to go and what to do on their first day.

TxDOT also reminds parents to teach children not to be distracted by headphones or electronic devices, to look both ways before crossing the street and to only cross at intersections or designated crosswalks.

The agency also released tips for drivers in school zones. Being aware of traffic patterns around schools, staying alert and off your phone, stopping and yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks, dropping off children in designated areas, and watching for school buses and children who may dart between vehicles can help enhance safety for everyone during the school year.
