HANOVER, N.H. (WCAX) – Social media continues to play a role in suicide consideration and Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center doctors are working during Suicide Prevention Month to get the word out that help is available. Nearly one in five kids has seriously considered suicide, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
According to the CDC, more than 9% of today’s youth have attempted to take their own life. Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center psychiatrist Matthew Duncan said not all social media is bad, but parents need to have an open dialogue about what their kids are doing online.
“I think some of the national movements to restrict phone usage, to put safeguards in place are really what parents need, it’s not something that we can really do alone,” Duncan said.
Help is available to anyone 24 hours a day by calling the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.
