LAWRENCE, Mass., Sept. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — September 12 was National “Report Medicare Fraud” Day, an opportunity to remind Medicare beneficiaries, families, and caregivers that reporting suspected Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse can help protect not only individual beneficiaries but the Medicare program as a whole.
While preventing Medicare fraud is critical, prevention alone cannot stop every instance of fraud. Detecting questionable charges and reporting them are equally important parts of protecting Medicare. The Massachusetts Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Program provides free, confidential assistance to Massachusetts Medicare beneficiaries, their family members, and caregivers who have questions and concerns about possible Medicare fraud, errors, or abuse.
The MA SMP Program encourages beneficiaries to keep track of the healthcare services they receive and compare those records with their Medicare Summary Notices (MSNs), Explanations of Benefits (EOBs), and other billing statements. Beneficiaries should look for charges for services, medical equipment, or tests they do not recognize or did not receive.
When beneficiaries are unable to address a concern on their own, the MA SMP Program is poised to help review the situation and determine next steps. As appropriate, MA SMP refers complaints of suspected fraud or abuse to investigative authorities.
