Douglas County cyber-crime experts train metro law enforcement on financial fraud | #cybercrime | #infosec

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Douglas County cyber-crime investigators shared their expertise with metro-area law enforcement officers as part of an effort to bring more scammers to justice and return money to victims.

Investigators said officers need additional training on financial crimes because suspects are often located overseas, making arrests more difficult.

“The fraud economy if taken as a whole globally is probably going to be the fifth or sixth largest economy in the world, so comparable to a large nation state,” said Deputy Michael DeChellis of the DCSO. “Some of that is based in the US, a lot of it is based in third world countries.”

Douglas County’s approach to combating scammers produced results last week when deputies arrested a couple from Illinois in a sting operation.
