Davanagere: Director general of police (DG&IGP) MA Saleem on Tuesday said cybercrime, financial frauds, narcotics-related offences and organised crime have emerged as major challenges for the police department, requiring more focused and effective investigation.Speaking to reporters in Davanagere after reviewing departmental work and the progress of criminal investigations in the district, he said cyber and financial crimes demanded specialised attention and intensive probing compared to conventional offences.Saleem warned that cases involving police personnel in criminal activities or aiding offenders severely damage the image of the force. “When those entrusted with maintaining law and order become involved in crime, it sends a wrong message to society. Such cases are viewed seriously and strict action is taken,” he said.He added that police officers are expected to be role models and any instance of unethical conduct by them would not be tolerated. Investigations into such cases are under way, he said.The DG&IGP also acknowledged a shortage of housing facilities for police officers and staff in the district. Recalling his tenure in Davanagere, he said he too had lived in a rented house and noted that infrastructure requirements were being addressed in phases.Saleem said the district police were functioning efficiently, with no major shortcomings in crime detection or maintenance of law and order.IGP Ravikanthe Gowda, SPs HT Shekhar and Yashodha Vantagudi, among others, were present.
