A Ghanaian court has sentenced two Nigerian nationals to 20 years in prison each after finding them guilty of trafficking fellow Nigerians into Ghana with false job promises before allegedly forcing them to engage in cybercrime.
Kingsley Ndifon, 29, and Emmanuel Akong, 25, were convicted of human trafficking and causing harm by Circuit Court “B” in Tema following a full trial, according to Punch Newspapers.
According to a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on Facebook on Wednesday and seen by reporters on Friday, the two men lured Nigerian nationals to Ghana with promises of employment.
Once they arrived, the victims were allegedly held captive and forced to participate in internet fraud.
The suspects were arrested on August 20, 2023, in Sebrepor, a suburb of Tema, after the Afienya District Police Command received a distress call reporting that several people were being held against their will.
A police patrol team, assisted by local residents, raided the house and rescued 11 Nigerian nationals who had been confined inside.
During a search of the property, officers arrested the two suspects and seized 16 laptops and an iPad.
Police investigations found that the victims had been recruited in Nigeria with offers of employment but were instead coerced into carrying out cyber-related criminal activities after arriving in Ghana.
According to investigators, the suspects confiscated the victims’ mobile phones and identity cards before forcing them to commit internet fraud using laptops supplied to them.
The investigation also revealed that the victims were fed only once a day and were subjected to severe physical abuse whenever they failed to follow the suspects’ instructions.
