The hacker behind the gigantic GTA 6 gameplay leak has been removed from a secure hospital and transferred to a standard prison following his sentencing late 2023.
Arion Kurtaj was found guilty of numerous charges such as hacking and fraud after a spree of cybercrime. It ended with him accessing Rockstar’s internal communications system and posting 90 videos of GTA VI online years before its release. GTA V’s source code was also published online. Due to his autism and a threat to reoffend, Kurtaj was placed in a hospital indefinitely for life. However, that has now changed.
We first got wind of this occurrence back in March. We reported on how Kurtaj had smuggled a phone into the prison and was gloating on Snapchat about how “amazing” his time in the hospital was. However, there was never an official update from the UK’s legal system.
Justice Ahead
As spotted by @FriendlyAaron1, BBC reporter Joe Tidy, Kurtaj has indeed been shipped off to a standard prison where he will remain at least until a retrial takes place. The journalist explains that reporting restrictions by the courts kept coverage like this from being shared by the media. As of July 14th, the High Court judge lifted said reporting restrictions meaning Tidy could confirm Kurtaj was moved into a prison cell.
That’s not the end of Kurtaj’s story. As per Tidy, the hacker will be facing a traditional criminal trial in November this year. This is because he has been deemed medically fit by doctors to stand trial again. We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out. Based on how it went last time, it does not seem like a hopeful conclusion for the young hacker.
