GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — After a ransomware attack closed all Kent District Library branches for days, most of them will be open in some capacity Wednesday, the library system said.

The Cascade Township, Kentwood (Richard L. Root), Plainfield Township and Wyoming branches, which were open for limited hours Tuesday, will return to normal hours starting Wednesday, KDL said in an email to patrons.

Kent District Library blames ‘ransomware’ for closures

All other branches, except the Kelloggsville Branch, will open at noon and close at their regular times. The Kelloggsville Branch website indicates it will remain closed until 3 p.m. Thursday.

Public computers as well as printers, copiers and gaming labs will not be available for use. Patrons can still use WiFi, check out materials, attend regularly scheduled programs and use study rooms, KDL said.

The branch closures are due to a network outage caused by a ransomware attack. KDL says it’s working with third-party digital forensic and cybersecurity specialists to investigate and get the systems working again.

Because of the closures, holds will not expire until May 4, due dates have been extended to May 12, and user accounts will not expire until June 1. Patrons won’t be billed for any items until May 12. Auto renewals are still happening but emails cannot be sent, KDL said.
