BROOKLYN, N.Y. (WRGB) — New York state is cracking down on addictive social media algorithmic feeds for kids.
Gov. Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James announced final regulations for New York’s Safe for Kids Act at an event Tuesday morning.
The law bans platforms from providing addictive algorithmic feeds to users under 18 without parental consent.
It also bans platforms from sending notifications to minors from midnight to 6 a.m. without parental consent.
“Children need to sleep. Sleep is so fundamentally important and critical to a child’s growth and to their development,” James said.
Penalties could be $5,000 per violation, according to state officials.
“Social media companies, you’re now on notice. The regulations are done. You have 180 days to come into compliance,” Hochul said.
The new law will take effect in January 2027.
