WOODWAY, Texas (KWTX) – More than a dozen Hewitt police officers are taking over South Bosque Elementary School, not for an emergency but for critical training.
KWTX stepped inside their medical training session where officers practiced applying tourniquets, carrying severely injured victims and removing them from danger, all with speed and precision.
“I’m very very big on that our area police officers know our campuses,” says Chief of Police for Midway ISD, Jeff Foley.
Foley says the boot camp combines high-intensity lectures with hands-on simulations. Officers study the history of active shooter events, breaking down what worked and what didn’t.
They also practice tactical room entries, learning how to safely open doors that could conceal victims or a threat.
“To look in a classroom in a safe way that protects officers from getting attacked or any kind of violence response,” Foley adds.
And even using force on force training. “They use what’s called a simunition gun which fires this little soap bullet and while it hurts, it is safe where they can actually see what it’s like in those situations,” he adds.
Foley helped organize the training, aiming to ensure that every local department responds together, effectively and in sync.
“I hope that they have that confidence within themselves as police officers to know if something does happen on one of our campuses or any campus, that they are confident enough to go inside that building and take care of the problem,” he says.
The officers will return Thursday July 3 for one final day of training. Leaving sharper, stronger and ready to protect.
